Antigua & Barbuda Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Royal Antiguan 04/22/2003
Reviewers Rating: Good
I stayed there in February 03. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. I was a non-inclusive guest, and chose the resort because low room rates were tied to a reduced airfare offer from a major airline. I upgraded to a water view room, which I recommend as the view is very pretty. The rooms were clean and comfortable enough. The amenities were very nice. The pool was fine and the beach was beautiful. The workout facilities (located on a separate building near the resort entrance) were sparse at best. Skip that and opt for tennis or a walk or run around the resort instead. The food was fine, but very pricey if you were not all inclusive. For example, hot breakfast buffet was nearly $20 US, buffet lunch was about the same and dinner was about $30. Other dining options for lunch are Andes, the waterfront cafe (I recommend that (ala carte menu and nice view) for lunch and for dinner when open (though reservations needed). The hotel also had scheduled activities such as w! alks or trips to town and music some nights. I found the location a bit isolated and cabs are expensive to anywhere. However, there is bus service from nearby Five Islands Village (just over the hill from the resort) to St. John's which runs frequently during the day and only costs $1. In St. John's you can switch to other buses to get to other island destinations. In comparison, a cab trip to St. John's is about $12 each way. In all, I found this to be a good value if you're looking for beautiful weather, a nice beach and place to just relax. During the heart of a bad winter, I spent a week here and the weather was perfect, the facilities were adequate and the staff was friendly. I saw other reviews where people had panned the staff and was surpised as my experiences were 100% positive and I travel a lot. Another item to note, I traveled solo as a female and felt very safe here as well as in St. John's, where I ventured during the daytime. Summar! y: If you can get a good deal, I say go. As for all-inclusive, it's up to you. I saved about 1/2 what I would have spent all-inclusive, but I didn't eat three meals per day or drink myself into oblivion. And, the drink prices were actually fairly reasonable.
