Costarica Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Hotel Punta Leona 01/14/2004
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Hotel Punta Leona has its good and bad points. You will like it if you are going there to enjoy nature but not if you are expecting to use it as a typical resort (i.e. for the pool, activities, etc.)
Good Points:
The rainforest is so beautiful and the resort is surrounded by 750 acres of primary and secondary rainforest. There are monkeys, toucans, numerous butterflies, many colourful birds, insects, etc. We went to Manuel Antonio for a day and found the forest at our hotel to be much superior to Manuel Antonio, plus, no one uses the trails at Punta Leona.
The playa blanca beach is also very beautiful but crowded on the weekends (we thought we were in Brazil when we first arrived!).
Bad Points:
In our opinion, the hotel is poorly managed and the owners seem very money hungry. There are way too many people for the amount of facilities. Many wealthy costa ricans have vacation homes on this property and have access to the facilities, plus, the hotel allows people to visit with day passes which makes the place overcrowded. We never used the pool because it was full of children, very noisy and looked cloudy. The pool area was always packed.
A major disappointment was the amount of noise and traffic on the resort - e.g. children speeding by you on ATVs which was not only annoying but also dangerous.
A lot of the trails had been unkept, e.g. old rotting trailers on the trails, an insect observatory which had been left to just fall apart - many eye sores amongst such incredible beauty. We even walked into a campground which looked liked a tent shanty town - we could not believe that the resort would do this for a few dollars - very shocking.
The rooms are also run down, I cannot really comment on the selvamar rooms because we stayed in a chalet, but the chalets were complete dumps, with bugs infesting them at night because the screens did not fit the windows.
The shuttle bus service was unreliable and if you do not have a car you are really stuck as the place is so spread out and about 4 kilomteres to the main road.
The buffet restaurant was a rip off - $12.00 and it only had about 4 items. Do not book all inclusive, you can eat better meals at local sodas off of the resort for about $2.00.
In sum, I loved the rainforest but did not enjoy the resort. I would look for a more quiet, intimate jungle lodge next time where the owners actually respect the natural surroundings.
