Barbados Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Turtle Beach Resort 09/26/2003
Reviewers Rating: Great
My husband and I stayed 6 nights in August 2003 at Turtle Beach Resort with our two boys aged 5 and 8. We travelled there from Antigua where we had enjoyed a 6 night stay at the Jolly Beach Resort. This was our first family vacation in the Caribbean but we have travelled with the children around Europe, the Mediterranean and the United States and have stayed in a number of All Inclusive hotels.
On arrival initial impressions of the hotel were favourable. We were allocated a top floor room in accordance with our emailed request. The room was bright, clean and nicely decorated but not furnished to accommodate a family of four. The sofa bed is not large enough for two children and we had to ask for an extra bed for our 5 year old and extra towels for him too. In my opinion the standard junior suites should have a maximum occupancy of three. I complained fairly strenuously to British Airways Holidays, through whom we had booked the holiday, but to little avail. The next day we were offered a slightly larger room but declined the offer having already unpacked most of our belonging and having only a further 5 nights remaining. We decided to make the most of an otherwise very nice, if somewhat crowded, room and put the issue to one side for the remainder of our pleasant stay.
Overall we found the food and cocktail selection to be excellent. There was always a number of child friendly dishes on offer at each restaurant. Generally the staff were very friendly although there were a few exceptions. We were frustrated by the inflexible booking system for evening meals and found it difficult to get an early dinner reservation at the main restaurant, Chelonia, unless one had the foresight to book a day or two in advance.
Evening entertainment was good quality but not terribly exciting. The hotel was dead by about 10.30pm. There were no shows or discos for adults or children.
Our children enjoyed the Kids Club (open daily from 9am to 9pm) and asked to go every day. They often chose to eat lunch and/or dinner in the club with their friends which allowed my husband and I to eat alone whilst being confident that our kids were safe and happy. The main attraction for the children were the computer game consoles and evening film at 7.30. Video games time was restricted to certain times during the day. There was a variety of other games and craft material available. The boys enjoyed the climbing frame and table tennis too.
The beach was crowded but pretty. The pools were nice and occasional waitress service around the pool was welcome. The hotel was predominently occupied by British guests, which was disappointing as I enjoy the atmosphere created by a mix of nationalities.
To sum up: a great resort for families and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
