Reviewers Rating: Fair
My feelings about this over-rated hotel are mixed. I would definiately not recommend it as there are much better choices for less money on St. Barts. (i.e. the next time I went to St. Barts I stayed at I'lle de France which was incredible!)
Rooms- The views were admitedly incredible but definitely overpriced even for St. Barts. The plunge pools were a nice touch though they would get dirty and were not always cleaned properly.
Food- Excellent and consistent with the high standards found elsewhere in St. Barts.
Service- Here's one problem...the management was "snooty" and clearly trying to grab as much money as possible. The staff/employees were all decent and hard-working, mostly younger kids from France, so there was a real difference here. We were billed for an extra night by the management and it required a huge amount of arguing and stress to convince them that the bill was incorrect (we saw other guests go through the same problem). Then, the management had the gall to try to contact our credit card company and ourselves over one year later (!) to try to collect again the funds for one night's stay (we had already paid for a number of nights, food, tips etc and left a small fortune with the hotel)....Talk about cheap!
St. Barts is absolutely beautiful and if you have the money it is worth staying there. I've been a number of times and it remains my favorite Island. But don't get suckered in by what the guide-books have to say about Carl Gustav...stay at the I'lle de France or elsewhere. Or better yet, book a villa.
Josh
