Dominica is the source of some of the best straw products in the Caribbean, including renowned vetiver-grass mats, dyed larouma reed baskets and other Carib handicrafts. You'll find them in shops on the island and in the Carib Territory in the north, a worthwhile excursion. The craft shops at the cruise ship dock in Cabrits and at Canefield Airport also have a good selection of locally made crafts.

Visit the Old Market Plaza in Roseau for handicrafts, spices such as saffron, a variety of hot peppers and the island's excellent coffee known as Café Dominique. While you're here, drop in at the fine Dominica Museum above the tourist office. Don't miss the public market, an amazing sight, especially on Saturday mornings, with mouth-watering produce brought in by farmers. Watch fishermen blow a conch shell to announce the arrival of fresh fish for sale.

Jollys Pharmacy (Roseau Map F-3 and E-3) now has two locations for your pharmacy needs. They also have their own island-made bay rum and fragrant soaps. They can mail your gifts home for you. Visit the Frontline Cooperative (Roseau Map D-3) for local newspapers, postcards and Caribbean literature including works by Dominican authors Lennox Honeychurch and Jean Rhys. Their t-shirts, music, and Dominican cookbooks make great souvenirs. Artwork by Dominican artists including Earl Etienne, our cover artist, can be seen at Caribana (Roseau Map E-3). They exhibit works by other well-known artists, too, such as Ellingworth Moses and Arnold Toulon. You'll also find wood carvings and other high-quality crafts here. And refreshments are available!

Dominican Pottery (Roseau Map E-2) offers pottery from local clay, some made by inmates in the prison work program. They also have handpainted cards. Dominican grass rugs, from small to room size, are made and sold at Tropicrafts (Roseau Map E/F-5). They can fill custom orders and ship for you. They also offer Carib baskets and dolls in local dress called robe douette.

The gift shop at the Papillote Wilderness Retreat (Dominica Map I-5) has wood carvings of Louis Desire, handmade quilts, and books of local interest. Their private label hot pepper sauce, jams, coffees, T-shirts and Creole dolls make great gifts. Floral Gardens Gift Shop (Dominica Map D-6), next to the Carib Reserve, specializes in Carib Indian crafts including calibash bowls, straw handbags, vases, and rainforest bead jewelry. They also have a line of casualwear.

Visit Baroon International (Roseau Map E-2) at their new location. Here find duty-free jewelry made from 18K gold and silver, diamonds, rubies and semiprecious stones such as hematite, jade, malachite and red and pink coral. Custom designs are available. Colombian Emeralds (Roseau Map F-4) located on the bay-front at the Fort Young Hotel is well known throughout the Caribbean for duty-free jewelry, international timepieces and gemstones including their specialty, emeralds from Colombia! At Ego Boutique (Roseau Map E-2) their multi-lingual staff will help you select internationally and regionally made linen and cotton clothing. For the home, naturally made craft items from Europe, Asia and Africa as well as quilted and appliqued cushions made on the island are also available.

PhotoWorld (Roseau Map E-4) can fill all your photography needs including film, batteries and the full line of Kodak products. They offer quality film processing for your pictures of beautiful Dominica.
