French law dictates when shops can hold sales, and, normally, there are two periods during the year that are so designated. For 2009, the first period will be from May 2 until June 5; the second period will take place from October 10 until November 13. These are excellent times to find real bargains on quality items. So, if you're headed to St. Barth during one of these times, be sure to leave plenty of space in your suitcase. Or, better yet, take an extra!
Absolutely Wine in Grand Fond has a large selection of grand crus, Armagnac, cognac, rhum, French vodka, wines and foie gras. They hold a wine-tasting every day at the shop and offer free delivery. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
If you'll be on St. Barth before June 28, be sure to take an empty suitcase with you! Unlike the U.S. where there seems to be a sale every weekend, the French government controls when the shops on St. Barth can hold sales. Sales can occur twice a year, and this year's dates are May 17 through June 28 and September 27 through October 25. Savings can be substantial. For example, La Maison des Plantes in Lurin has slashed prices on plants by 50% and on pots by 20%. The Swedish Design Center is selling items 35% to 50% below their original prices. You'll see ads for most of the boutiques advertising a range of discounts from 20% to 75%.
No sooner did Les Puces, the secondhand store in Corossol, close than a new one opened in Anse des Cayes. Le Grenier de Nuit & Jour invites you to bring any furniture or decorative items that you'd like to sell to their store Mondays through Fridays between 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm or on Saturdays between 9:00 am and noon. You can call them at 05 90 27 67 78 or 06 90 63 76 97.
For several years now, the quaint village of Corossol has been home to a large store (Les Puces, which can be loosely translated to "flea market") that sells a broad variety of used goods - everything from furniture to artwork, dishes, glassware, fans, clothing, you name it. Sadly, they have announced that they will be closing as of April 30.
Since the intrepid Candee is on island we have some more on The Swedish Design Center (and a photo):
Nils and Susanna Passburg, the delightful and knowledgeable owners of The Swedish Design Center of St. Barthélemy, are proud to present a unique showing of JB Bags and a pre-launch of a book on Gustavia by Jenny Stening on February 23 between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Ms. Stening will be on the island with an exclusive pre-print version of her first book about the Swedish buildings in Gustavia. Her book is based on a sign-posted walk of significant buildings and places in Gustavia. She created and presented this project to the municipality of St Barth in 2004. It is an architectural and historic guide to Gustavia that focuses on the years 1785-1878 when the island was under Swedish rule. In addition, an extensive collection of her JB design bags will be on display. The bags combine modern design with the use of high-tech sail cloths that make the most of the strong, light, durable and water-resistant characteristics of this material.
The Swedish Design Center is the island's first retail establishment offering an innovative, unique collection of contemporary and modern classic objects and accessories of Swedish design, heritage and origin. It serves as the island's exclusive distributor for established and up-and-coming designers of Swedish jewelry, silver, glassware, furniture, home accessories, and other items. As quoted by Susanna, "It must stand the wear of the eye.""
The Swedish Design Center is located in the little shopping mall Les Amandiers, Route de Saline, St. Jean across the street from Le Glacier.

St. Barth was once under Swedish rule, and that history is still present in many forms, such as architecture, street names and celebrations such as Pitea Day. Now, that presence is represented in the Swedish Design Centre, which recently opened in St. Jean. The boutique showcases a unique collection of contemporary and classic objects of Swedish design, heritage and origin designed by established and up-and-coming designers. You'll find jewelry, glassware, furniture, home accessories and other items. The boutique is located in the Les Amandiers mall on the Route de Saline, across from Le Glacier. They are open Monday-Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. If you visit their web site at http://www.swedishdesigncentre.com, you can view a list of their guest designers along with short bios and subscribe to their newsletter.
Opening on the 26th of December (Reception: Saturday December 30th, 2008, 6 - 8pm) in to-B.Art Gallery St Barths, the exhibition of the new paintings by the important emerging Italian artist Lucio Salvatore is already gathering buzz in magazines worldwide.
Salvatore paints using oils, acrylics and resins which are put in movement through the use of fire. The dynamic process, which begins with the application of resins on the paint when it is flowing on the bottom of the studio pool, the ultimate artist's canvas, is set in motion through fire, eternalized on film, then printed on plexiglass in large format limited editions of 5.

Although the restaurant Le Rivage in Grand Cul de Sac closed its doors several months ago, you can still enjoy their delicious rhum vanille. Bottles of this elixir can be purchased at the boutique La Pinta in Gustavia, at the restaurant O'Corner (previously The BBQ), and at the restaurant Le Tamarin in Saline.
Le Petit Deauville, that little shop on La Pointe in Gustavia with the wonderful sorbets and ice cream, has opened a second location at Rue de la Republique - across from where the Voyager docks. In addition to sorbets and ice cream, they also offer coffee, fresh fruit juice and snacks. I hope they plan to stay open late enough for the arrival of the final crossing of the Voyager from St Martin!
From May 24 to June 31, St Barth may be just the place to find the greatest bargains. This is the period of the official sales, and most stores reduce prices from 50% to 70%. Now, remember, the price reductions are on merchandise from last season's collections. But, last season's collections on St Barth are years ahead of next year's collections in the States! So, hurry on down and don't forget to bring an empty suitcase - and a credit card. The next official sale period is from September 29 to October 27.
A few more closings for the next two months have recently been announced. Bacchus, a wine and spirits boutique in Gustavia, will be closed from September 14 to October 15. The restaurant K'fé Massai in Lorient will be closed from September 11 to October 20. Le News will stop its daily publication from September 11 until October 3. However, Le Journal has resumed publication and the daily publication L'Essentiel is still available.
The dog days of summer always bring their own activity to the island. Road repairs are in full swing everywhere and many boutiques and other businesses are closing or opening in preparation for November when the majority of tourists will once again begin to descend. Afrik'Art and What's Up in Gustavia and Indigo in St. Jean are holding total liquidation sales before closing their doors. The hotel Le Manoir de Marie in Lorient is also selling everything before closing: furniture, paintings, rugs, dishes, glassware and more. These are excellent opportunities to pick up merchandise at dirt-cheap prices. A new fitness center called atmosphere has opened in the former diggings of FormaForm in Gustavia across from the restaurant La Saladerie. The building houses a Fitness Studio on the first floor with memberships available for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months, while the second floor is home to a Pilates Studio. Le Piment in St. Jean has been slightly remodeled and is now open from 8:00 AM until midnight, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks and tapas.
As always, things are changing on St. Barth. The Crazy Shop next to Match in St. Jean is closing. Raffia and Les Pieds dans L'Eau in St. Jean have already closed and one larger store is under construction in their place. Just across the street is a new "mini-mall" with space for seven boutiques. The restaurant BBQ in Gustavia is being renovated literally from the ground up. The gym Forma Form in Gustavia is constructing a much larger building (with parking!!) in Lurin. La Boucherie Traditionelle (a butcher shop) with hormone-free meats has opened in St. Jean across from Eden Roc. And, next to the new butcher shop is an organic and natural food store called Epicerie Bio.
