A taste for rum?

FORT DE FRANCE, Martinique -- The French Caribbean island of Martinique has many things to recommend it: Black-sand beaches and lush landscapes go hand in hand with all the amenities of a bustling part of France, from bakeries to roads filled with the latest Renaults and Citroens.
The local accent is a lilting mix of Parisian and Creole -- as is the cuisine -- reflecting Martinique's blend of the tropics and France. But perhaps the most perfect symbol of this melange is in the rum.
I arrived in Martinique thinking I did not like rum. However, that changed after my first sip of a three-year-old dark rum from the La Favorite Distillery.
