If you're the type who enjoys frying gently in the sun for a fortnight with a copy of The Da Vinci Code in hand, followed by regular trips to fashionable nightclubs of an evening, Dominica will probably prove too rough and ready. There are no great beaches to speak of and you could practically bungee jump into the potholes in the roads, but it does have the East Caribbean's highest peak (Morne Diablotin, 4,747ft), more than 365 rivers, blankets of dense forest, the world's second-largest boiling volcanic lake, mountain biking, whale watching, a thriving native Carib minority and the West Indies' best diving. Come here if you want some activity with your tan.
