Tornado hits Dajabon (May 9, 2007)

DAJABON, Dominican Republic. - The mayor Sonia Mateo said the tornado that hit this city yesterday caused some RD$150 million in losses to agriculture, power lines, homes and others.

Meanwhile, as situation of chaos prevails as tap water, electricity and other services have yet to resume as the population still shivers from the scare.

Mateo said the tornado destroyed 30% of the houses, toppled thousands of trees and the Civil Defense reports at least 38 people were injured, none of these life-threatening. This morning Public Works, Civil Defense, and other Government agencies sent brigades to begin the cleanup restore public services.

Most of those wounded were dispatched after receiving medical attention, with just four soldiers and two pregnant women remain hospitalized here.

Since early today storm clouds remain, but had not rained close to noon.

The tornado seriously affected the bridge that links this community with Ouanaminthe on Haitian side and the border crossing hasn’t been restored.

The passage towards Haiti is currently suspended.
