Delta Gets Aggressive

Postby KarenS » Wed Jun 07, 2006 7:34 am

From "Delta Air Lines’ Latin initiative is becoming more aggressive. The nation’s third-largest carrier, currently fighting to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is launching service to five more Latin American and Caribbean destinations.

The line-up is as follows:

- On June 1, Delta Connection began serving Atlanta (ATL) to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico (BQN), with a quartet of weekly CRJ700 regional jets.

- Also on June 1, Delta proper began flying 737-800s on a daily basis nonstop from Atlanta to Kingston, Jamaica (KIN).

- June 3, Delta launched Boston (BOS) to Cancun (CUN) nonstops. These 737-800 flights operate Saturdays only.

- June 3 was similarly the start date for Saturday-only 737-800 nonstops from Cincinnati (CVG) to Cancun.

- The Saturday-only strategy (since fewer business people fly on Saturdays, more airplanes are available for leisure routes) applies to Los Angeles (LAX) to Cancun (CUN). Nonstop service took wing on June 3. In this instance, 757s do the duty.

- More Cancun, this time from Washington Dulles (IAD), and also solely on Saturdays. Delta 787-800s started plying the route June 3.

- Ponce, Puerto Rico (PSE), is an increasingly popular niche destination for travelers. Delta Connection began lofting CRJ700s between Atlanta and PSE twice weekly on June 3."
