Shutdown Not Affecting Cruiseships

Postby KarenS » Fri May 05, 2006 7:20 am

From "The third day of a partial government shutdown in Puerto Rico that has closed public offices and schools is not affecting the cruise industry, the companies say.

Carnival Cruise Lines' Elation ship, which embarked on a seven-night Caribbean voyage Sunday from Miami, will still pull into San Juan Thursday for a 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. visit, said spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz. No problems are anticipated, she said.

Royal Caribbean International had two ships call on San Juan this week -- the Explorer of the Seas on Tuesday and the Voyager of the Seas today.

In a letter to Puerto Rico tourism industry 'friends,' the island's top tourism promoter stressed that the government shutdown did not extend to services relevant to tourists, including airport and cruise facilities.

'Puerto Rico's many attractions, resort areas and tourist services have not been affected by these office closings,' wrote Terestella Gonzalez Denton, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, which markets the island as a tourist destination. 'Puerto Rico continues to remain very secure as all emergency services have been unaffected; hospital facilities, EMT services, fire departments and police stations are operating as normal.''"
