From the Antigua Sun: "Antigua & Barbuda is hoping to tap into the French market as it seeks to bolster activity in the industry during the traditional slow months of the summer.

Tourism Minister Harold Lovell made the disclosure during an interview with the Antigua Sun, indicating discussions have been taking place with Guadeloupe and Martinique for additional traffic during those crucial months.

'We are hoping that we can get some trade from them during the summer but that process is taking more time that we would have wanted, but it’s ongoing.'

Antigua & Barbuda and the rest of the region are, at present, experiencing tremendous difficulties in the summer, as the cruise lines redeploy their vessels to the Mediterranean and northern Europe.

The minister, on a recent trip to Miami, held discussions with the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association and was able to secure the Carnival Destiny which will start serving the Antiguan destination as of January 2007, for 50 weeks in the year, including the summer months.

'We also have the Liberty which will be coming year round. That will be coming monthly in the summer and the winter months. From next summer, instead of having two calls per month in the summer we will be having seven calls per month in the summer,' Lovell added."
