PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic. - The Punta Cana tourism zone became the Caribbean’s top golf destination in 2006 and this year expects the arrival of more than 2 million tourists via its international airport.

Ernesto Veloz, president of the East Zone Hotels and Tourism Projects Association, said the area has 7 golf courses, 3 in construction and another 3 to begin in the next few months. "This means that for 2008 in a linear route of 20 kilometers the lovers of this sport will have 10 courses available and for 2009 there’ll be 13."

The courses operating are located in Cap Cana, Punta Cana and Bavaro, whereas a second is being built in Cap Cana and in Punta Cana in the Roco Ki residential complex.

Veloz said the courses’ designers are world-renown including Jack Nicklaus, Pete B. Dye Jr., Tom Facio, Nick Price and Pepe Gancedo, which he said guarantees world quality golf.

He said 1,690 rooms in 6 hotels were built in the region in 2006. Two of them are new resorts and 3 others are expansions, bringing the area total to 24,703 rooms and 49 hotels.
