Another cruise ship fatality?

Here is the place to ask questions about cruising the Caribbean

Another cruise ship fatality?

Postby Anthony » Mon May 29, 2006 6:55 am

The <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/421926p-356170c.html">Daily News</a> is reporting:

"Cruise ship horror

Man jumps into sea and still missing

A cruise ship passenger jumped into the pitch-black ocean off the British Virgin Islands, prompting a futile 12-hour search that bogged down thousands of vacationers yesterday, officials said.

The unidentified man went overboard from the Carnival Legend vessel just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, the cruise line said. The liner was about 650 miles offshore after leaving Tortola on its way back to New York."

This is the second incident in a few weeks. The cruise ship companies, with bigger boats, and more passengers than ever, have to do something proactive about this situation.

That may not be possible an still allow for a vacation cruise. You could only allow guests on deck with an escort from the ship. But that kinda defeats the purpose of a fun vacation. If someone wants to do away with themselve it would be pretty hard to prevent.

Why is it the cruise industry's fault?

Postby SaveOnTropics » Mon Jul 17, 2006 11:14 pm

I can certainly understand the issue when it's about foul play on a cruise ship, but if someone JUMPS overboard ... well then they JUMPED overboard. That's a choice and no one's fault but the person who did it. If no one is contesting that the person JUMPED, then it's a closed case if you ask me. I cannot imagine why someone would book a fabulous Caribbean cruise to do something so horrible.
