Parking at Airport FYI

Postby KarenS » Fri Apr 14, 2006 7:57 am

From "Problems with the new parking pay machines at Owen Roberts International Airport not accepting some of the newer Cayman currency with the double strip should be eased out this week.

According to the Cayman Islands Airports Authority, the machine manufacturer was in the final stages of calibrations to accept the newer Cayman currency with the double strip last week.

Since the machines were introduced at the end of February there have been some technical glitches with the pay machines involving some of the new notes being rejected. However, the CIAA asserts that these glitches are now at a minimum.

The authority also states that like all vending machines, the machine will not readily accept crumpled or torn bills so people also need to ensure that they smooth out their bills before entering them in the machines.

Since the machines have been introduced an attendant has been present to help people and to come to their aid if technical problems arise.

'When people learn to read the guidance signage and generally become more familiar with the system, there will be less need for the attendant to be present. Currently, technical ‘glitches’ are at a minimum,' said Snr. Manager of Airport Operations with the CIAA Kerith McCoy.

To offer additional guidance, parking–information signs have been placed in various locations around the parking lots. Customers are encouraged to read these signs in order to familiarise themselves with the procedures.

The short term lot was to have been opened to the public on Wednesday, 12 April.

With the wheel lock penalty for illegal parking at the airport now increased to $75, slowly people are realising the high price of their non–compliance, Mr. McCoy said.

The new upgraded parking system will ultimately remove the human factor of fee collection and will afford parking lot users the convenience of doing all transactions automatically.

CIAA thanks the public for its patience and understanding while the parking facilities were improved. For more information, please contact the CIAA at 943–7070."

Yes there is a Meter Maid to help you at the machine BUT there is also a problem at the other end. When you put in your ticket to open the gate, the machine cannot read the ticket. I have seen this happen numerous times. An assistant will come out and help if you buzz them.
