Airport safety rating upgraded

Postby KarenS » Sat Apr 01, 2006 8:33 am

In a report on "U.S. aviation authorities have upgraded the safety rating of airports in eight eastern Caribbean countries and the British Virgin Islands.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration reinstated category one status to the airports, ten years after downgrading them to category two.

The new rating means the islands can run charter services to any U.S. territory, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, said Kendol Morgan, Organization of Eastern Caribbean States spokesman.

Morgan said the FAA had downgraded the airports on the small islands because they had inadequate facilities, lacked technical staff and were operating under outdated legislation.

The members of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority are Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis."
