New resort okayed for Beef Island

The British Virgin Islands has approved construction of an upscale resort and golf course on a largely uninhabited island, over opposition from environmentalists who want the area to remain pristine.

Developers of the Beef Island Golf & Country Club Resort, a roughly 650-acre (260-hectare) project, received government approval after months of debate in the British Caribbean territory of some 22,000 people.

Chief Minister Orlando Smith championed the US$80 million (euro61 million) project, which will cover most of Beef Island and includes an 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus.
