Postby KarenS » Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:01 am

Havana, June 1 (Prensa Latina) The 2006 Barrientos Memorial Track and Field Tournament will be held at the Havana Pan American Stadium June 3 and 4, with participation of athletes from Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and host Cuba.

Athens 2004 Olympics champ and world record holder Osleydis Menendez (javelin throw) and hammer thrower Yipsy Moreno, runner up at Helsinki 2005 World Championships, stand out in the Cuban delegation.

Triple jumpers Yoandri Betanzos, runner-up at Paris 2003 and Helsinki 2005 World Championships, and rising star Alexis Copello, are expected to engage in a duel for the gold medal.

Sydney 2000 Olympics long jump champion Ivan Pedroso, also multi-gold medallist at World Championships, will also compete. Long jump will be one of the greatest attractions because young jumper Ibrahin Camejo recently defeated Pedroso with an 8.23 meter leap.

Others to be in the spotlight are javelin throwers Guillermo Martinez, who broke his personal best (81.36 meters) to set a new 85.02 meter record at the Cuban Sports Olympiad, and veteran Emeterio Gonzalez, who won the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic in 2003.

The 100 meter hurdles, featuring Sydney 2000 Olympics champ and Athens 2004 silver medallist Anier Garcia, and budding star Dayron Robles, runner up at the World Indoor Championships in Moscow, Russia, will also attract fans.

National Track and Field Commissioner Jose Cede√Īo assured that the best local athletes will participate in the event.
